Calculate the Average

The built-in functions in Microsoft Excel look for a range of cells. Sometimes, the suggested range is NOT correct.

In this example, the Average equation added in the salaries, AND the SUM of the salaries. This makes a Circular Reference, it adds itself again and again and again.

2. Try it: Select the Right Range

Select Cell D6.

Go to Formulas-> Function Library.

Go to AutoSum.

Click on Average.

Use your cursor to highlight (select) Cells D2:D4.

3. What Do You See Now?

The correct equation in Cell D6 is: =AVERAGE(D2:D4)
